Sustainable food

We prepare our meals in accordance with the nutritional and dietary guidelines issued by the National Nutrition Council to ensure a good day for everyone, from children to the elderly.

At Voimian Pata in Lahdesjärvi, Tampere – Finland’s most modern production kitchen – 33,000 meals are prepared every day for daycare centers, schools and educational institutions. Environmental impact and energy efficiency were taken into account in all design decisions right from the construction phase. The building features environmentally friendly CO2 cooling, with condensation heat utilised to heat water and supply air, and heat recovered for air conditioning. Energy-efficient lighting is based on motion detection. In terms of logistics, combining meal and dispatch deliveries has halved the volume of transport. The solar power system on the roof of Voimian Pata covers three-quarters of the cooling capacity required by the production kitchen.

Special dietary meals are prepared safely at Voimian Pata.

We are part of the Carbon-Neutral Tampere 2030 project. Every day, we offer two meal options in daycare centers, schools and educational institutions, and you’re welcome to try both. One of the options is always a vegetarian meal, which is good for both people and the environment. The vegetarian meals are mainly lacto-ovo-vegetarian, meaning that, in addition to plant-based products, they contain milk and eggs.

Children and young people are guided towards making healthy choices through food education, by encouraging them to taste and try new flavours. Product development is used to make plant-based food more appealing and to increase the proportion of vegetables and other climate-friendly ingredients in other dishes as well. In practice, this means, for example, partially replacing meat, rice and dairy products in food preparation with lower-emission ingredients. Pirkanmaan Voimia aims to ensure that half of the meals served to children and young people are climate-friendly, which is also in line with nutritional recommendations.

The procurement criteria take into account aspects relating to food traceability and safety, as well as animal welfare and health.

In 2025, the proportion of domestically produced food we purchased was high at 78.6%

The domestic content ratio is calculated on the basis of the products purchased in the greatest quantities. The calculation does not take into account products that are not available domestically, such as bananas, coffee or spices.
